Test 8: Parameter study on a three-storey plan

Test 8: Parameter study on a three-storey plan

PASS

1. Definition

On the three-storey floor plan of Fig. 7, with four persons in each room, the total evacuation time is determined while one person parameter at a time is varied and the others stay at fixed standard values. Each parameter is varied twice: once equal for all persons (for example speed 0.5, 0.75 or 1.0 m/s) and once spread uniformly around a fixed mean (for example 0.5 to 1.0 m/s around 0.75 m/s). The results are recorded in graphs.

3. What to expect

RiMEA gives no expected values: it asks for graphs of the total evacuation time against each parameter, to be published on the RiMEA homepage. RiMEA sets no fixed pass limit (p. 28).

Our criterion: Evacuation time varies with parameters

5. Our implementation

Deviations from the standard:

  • The building has 3 floors with 10 rooms of 3 m by 3 m each (two rows of five along a corridor 2 m wide) and four persons per room, 120 agents in total. Fig. 7 has four rows of rooms per floor and more than 100 persons per floor.
  • The stairs are flat boxes of 2 m by 3 m that join the floors, with no speed reduction. There is one exit at the end of the ground-floor corridor.
  • Only the desired speed is varied. The constant values are 1.0, 1.25, 1.5 and 2.0 m/s, and the spread cases are uniform around 1.25 m/s with half-ranges of 0.25 and 0.5 m/s. RiMEA’s examples start at 0.5 m/s. Other parameters are not varied.
  • The pass rule is the suite’s own: the evacuation time falls strictly as the constant speed rises, and each spread case is within 30 % of the constant 1.25 m/s run. The test writes no graphs. All runs use seed 42.
