Test 12c: Influence of congestion

Test 12c: Influence of congestion

PASS

1. Definition

Three rooms in a row, 10 m, 10 m and 5 m long and 10 m wide, are joined by two identical bottlenecks, each 1 m wide and 0.2 m long. 150 agents of the RiMEA standard population, with no response time, start in the left 5 m of room 1. Their goal lies at the right edge of room 3. The background: hand calculations treat the flow as a function of bottleneck width, while a microscopic simulation also captures interactions in the queue in front of a bottleneck. The test determines the number of agents in rooms 1 and 2 over time and the flows through bottlenecks 1 and 2.

3. What to expect

RiMEA names no values and no pass limit. It asks for the time course of the agent numbers in rooms 1 and 2 and for the flows in bottlenecks 1 and 2 to be determined and documented.

Our criterion: Conservation of agents (RiMEA sets no criterion); N(t) per room and bottleneck flows reported

RiMEA 4.1.1 sets no pass criterion for this test; it asks for N(t) per room and the flow per bottleneck to be documented. Documentation test: only conservation of agents is asserted; N(t) and flows are reported.

  • test_congestion_at_bottlenecks: conservation: at every frame, agents in room 1 + bottleneck 1 + room 2 + bottleneck 2 + room 3 + evacuated = total spawned; RiMEA sets no criterion, flows and room-2 peak are reported only

5. Our implementation

Deviations from the standard:

  • The pass rule is the suite’s own (decision D17): only conservation is asserted. At every sampled frame the agents in rooms 1 to 3 and in the two bottlenecks, plus the agents already evacuated, add up to 150. The flow through each bottleneck and the peak number of agents in room 2 are reported and are not asserted. The notebook plots the agent count per room over time and the cumulative crossings at each bottleneck.
  • The flow is the number of agents minus one, divided by the time between the first and the last first-crossing of the bottleneck’s measurement line. RiMEA does not define a flow measure.
  • The scenario file deviates slightly from Fig. 14: room 2 is about 9.8 m and room 3 about 4.8 m long, the bottlenecks are about 1.0 m wide, and the goal is a strip at 24.1 to 24.8 m rather than at the right edge.
  • Agents have one desired speed (1.2 m/s), the suite’s default body radius of 0.15 m and one seed (42). RiMEA’s standard population (section 3.2.4, p. 16) defines sex and age; speeds follow from age (Fig. 3, p. 13) and body size is not defined.
