Test 12a: Position of the goal behind a bottleneck

Test 12a: Position of the goal behind a bottleneck

PASS

1. Definition

Two rooms are joined by a single bottleneck. 150 agents of the RiMEA standard population, with no response time, start in room 1. Their goal lies in room 2 at a distance a behind the bottleneck. Several runs vary a from 0 to 10 m, and the time needed to clear room 1 is determined as a function of a. The background: when agents are removed on reaching their goal, the goal’s distance to the last bottleneck can change the evacuation time.

3. What to expect

RiMEA describes the usual behaviour: the evacuation time is shortest when the goal sits directly behind the last bottleneck, and it grows with a until it reaches a constant value. RiMEA sets no pass limit.

Our criterion: Room-1 clearance time (last occupant leaves room 1) increases with goal distance a and levels off

5. Our implementation

Deviations from the standard:

  • The pass rule is the suite’s own (decision D21): every a of 1 m or more clears room 1 later than a = 0.2 m, and the mean over a of 4 m or more is not below the value at a = 1 m.
  • The smallest goal distance is 0.2 m, because the goal is a 0.2 m wide strip.
  • All agents walk at one constant desired speed of 1.2 m/s; RiMEA’s standard population derives speeds from age.
  • Agents use the suite’s default body radius of 0.15 m and one seed (42). RiMEA’s standard population defines sex and age only, not body size.
