Test 4: Movement around a corner

Test 4: Movement around a corner

PASS

1. Definition

A 2 m wide L-shaped hallway has a 90 degree corner. Twenty occupants with no pre-evacuation time and a walking speed of 1 m/s start uniformly distributed in a 2 m by 4 m area at one end and walk around the corner. Figure 2 gives a horizontal leg of 10 m before the 2 m corner square and a vertical leg of 10 m. The test is a check of the available space, not of the shape of trajectories. The tester measures the flow entering and leaving the corner, records any change, and reports how the destination is set.

3. What to expect

The occupants navigate the corner without penetrating the boundaries. ISO accepts a qualitative or a quantitative check of the paths.

Our criterion: All agents evacuate; agent bodies do not overlap the boundary (centre at least radius - 1 mm inside)

5. Our implementation

Deviations from the standard:

  • Both legs are 2 m shorter than in Figure 2: the horizontal leg is 8 m before the 2 m corner square and the vertical leg 8 m above it.
  • The pass rule is the suite’s own: all 20 agents evacuate and the centre of every agent stays at least its radius, less 1 mm, inside the walkable area (decision D16).
  • The flow entering and leaving the corner is not measured, and corners of other angles are not run.
